Rewind 3 years ago to 2015. I had just graduated by degree as a bioengineer, and was lucky enough to start my “career” at a large medical device company. As time went on, I started to understand that the rumor that I had heard many times: “the majority of what you learn in school, does not translate over to real-world jobs”. I know there are exceptions to this (spoiler alert!) however, in my case, it applied.
2 years into the position I was assigned a fairly extensive project in Excel. I quickly realized that this would require experience in Visual Basic (Excel’s programming language), which of course I did not have. I had taken a programming class early on in school as it was required for the degree, but of course had forgotten most of what I learned!
Where is the first place everyone goes when they need help with something they don’t know how to do? Google of course! It wasn’t the most ideal way to learn this new skill, but it definitely got the job done. This is where I realized I had actually enjoyed learning how to code and seeing the project take shape by using exactly what I had learned online.
Wanting to learn more, I did a bit of research and found a “Learn to Build iPhone Apps with No Programming Experience” course. Shout out to CodeWithChris! This course had great reviews, had lots to offer, and inexpensive compared to other classes. Oh, I should also note that I met the pre-requisites by having no programming experience ;)
Fast-forward 1 year to today, and I have my first iOS app “Get Sum!!” available for download on the Apple App Store! I’m not sure that I would have been able to do this without Chris’s course. He even goes into tips and tricks about developing your own app icon like the one for my game!
If you’re interested in picking up programming, I encourage you to take a look at the app (it’s free!) and see what 1 year can do for you.
If you enjoyed this post, I’d be very grateful if you’d help it spread by emailing it to a friend, or sharing it on Twitter or Facebook. Thank you!
